Award Winning, Affordable, Incredibly Well-crafted Whites and Reds from Domaine Lafouge

Those of you that have followed me (James) will by fully aware of my belief in this domaine. The winemaking here is getting better and better with each vintage, the balance of experience from Gilles and new techniques from his son Maxime as well as choice plots and lots of old vines is paying dividends. I was therefore incredibly pleased to see them recognised in the first iteration of Michelin’s guide for wineries, being awarded ‘One Michelin grape’. The list of names along side them reads like the who’s who of great winemakers: Ramonet, Armand Rousseau, Georges de Vogue, Sylvain Cathiard, Alex Moreau, Vincent Dancer, Yvon Clerget and another favourite of mine Bachelet-Monnot to name but a few.

Their geographical location in Auxey-Duresses rather than the less famous neighbour of Meursault in my has helped them to fly somewhat under the radar, and thankfully has kept prices reasonable. Do not be fooled however these are seriously good wines both red and white at all levels and I highly recommend everything we have to offer.

Auxey-Duresses Les Boutonniers 2022, Domaine Lafouge – £175/6 IB

2022 is set to be a potentially legendary vintage. The perfect balance of acidity and ripeness. As with it’s neighbour Meursault Meix Chavaux the soil here is made of clay and limestone imparting a mineral note that runs through the core. Cut apples, lemon and some peach and a touch of salinity to the finish. Very smart wine.

Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru La Chapelle 2020, Domaine Lafouge – £195/6 IB

Silky and open this plot tends to drink earlier than it’s neighbour Les Duresses. Full of strawberry and perfumed fruit, fine tanning and a complexity that only comes form 1er cru. Move this 1Km into Volnay and you would happily pay double the price.

Auxey-Duresses Les Boutonniers 2024, Domaine Lafouge – £175/6 IB

The 2024 Boutonniers has an even more pronounced minerality than years gone by, this is a very smart but incredibly drinkable wine even in youth. This rivals Meursault at half the price.

Meursault Les Meix Chavaux 2024, Domaine Lafouge – £275/6 IB

Only 50 meters from Boutonniers but with a more east exposure and 95-year-old vines. Smokey on the nose and perfumed green apples. The riper exposure has given more volume on the palate to the green apples and fresh apricot. The finish is electric, mineral and complex.

Meursault Clos de Rougeot (Monopole) 2024 , Domaine Lafouge – £550/6 IB

Maxime thinks this is the best iteration yet even though yields were down 40%. The mineral tension, iodine and concentration of tightly coiled fruit makes this a very serious wine. This will reward a few years of cellaring but it up there with the quality of wines double the price.

10 Cases – 6x75cl – Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Les Duresses 2024, Domaine Lafouge – £195/6 IB

Auxey’s best red plot, making wines that remind me of top quality Volnay from very old vines. Perfumed, wild strawberry, cherry, fine tannin. This will drink 1-2 years from vintage and last 5-10 more. A lovely wine.
