Château Latour is one of only three First Growths in the Pauillac appellation, as ranked in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification. Renowned worldwide for its power, precision, and extraordinary ageing potential, Latour is a benchmark of Left Bank Bordeaux. Vineyards at Latour have been recorded since the 14th century, situated at the southern boundary of Pauillac near Saint‑Julien on the banks of the Gironde estuary. Over centuries of change, the estate was acquired in 1993 by French entrepreneur François Pinault and his holding company, Groupe Artemis. Today the estate is run by his son, François‑Henri Pinault, with Frédéric Engerer, appointed Managing Director in 1998, serving as Chairman and CEO. Château Latour’s total vineyard area, certified organic since 2018, extends over 92 hectares, planted to 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 1% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare. The grand vin Château Latour represents roughly 30% of production and is made exclusively from fruit grown in the 47‑hectare Enclos, a historic walled vineyard farmed using biodynamic principles. Cabernet Sauvignon typically dominates the blend, often reaching up to 90% in top vintages. The soils here combine deep gravel with clay, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s trademark richness, concentration, and freshness. Latour also produces two other distinguished wines. Les Forts de Latour, first released in 1966, accounts for about 40% of annual output and is sourced from specific vineyard plots that deliver marked terroir expression; many critics consider it virtually a Classed Growth in its own right. Pauillac de Latour, introduced in 1989, offers another dimension of the estate’s character with earlier approachability. Since the 2012 vintage, both the grand vin and Les Forts de Latour have been released only when ready to drink rather than through the traditional en primeur system. For the grand vin this often means 10 to 15 years after vintage, while the second wine typically requires around eight years of cellaring before release.
