Château Léoville Poyferré is a renowned wine estate in the Saint‑Julien commune of the Médoc and holds Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) status in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification, a designation that continues to signal quality and prestige internationally. The estate traces its origins to the 18th century as part of the extensive Domaine de Léoville, then owned by the Marquis de Las Cases. After the French Revolution the domain was first divided into Château Léoville Las Cases and Château Léoville Barton. In 1840, a further division occurred through the marriage of Baron de Poyferré to the Marquis’s daughter, creating the property now known as Léoville Poyferré. In 1920 the estate was acquired by the Cuvelier family, alongside the neighbouring property Château Moulin Riche. Since 1979, under the leadership of owner Didier Cuvelier, Léoville Poyferré has undergone significant transformation in both vineyard management and winemaking practices. In 2017, his niece Sara Lecomte‑Cuvelier became Managing Director, bringing a modern perspective to the family tradition. For many vintages, the estate has benefited from the long‑standing consultancy of famed oenologist Michel Rolland, enhancing both texture and complexity in the wines. The vineyards extend over approximately 80 hectares of classic Left Bank terroir, planted to the four principal Bordeaux grape varieties: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. Each parcel is fermented separately in temperature‑controlled stainless steel vats before the final blend is assembled. The wines are aged for 18–20 months in French oak barrels, with 70–80% new oak typically used, supporting structure and aromatic complexity. Stylistically, Léoville Poyferré is often recognised for a more voluptuous and lush profile than some of its Léoville siblings, owing to its relatively higher proportion of Merlot, without sacrificing the classic structure and ageing potential expected from a Saint‑Julien Second Growth.
