Château La Louvière is a historic estate in the Pessac‑Léognan appellation of Bordeaux, tracing its origins back to the late 14th century. Over the centuries, the estate passed through numerous owners, including a religious order in the early 1600s. Following the French Revolution, the property was confiscated and sold to the Mareilhac family, owners of Château Rieussec in Sauternes. In 1965, the Lurton family acquired the estate from the Taquet family, initiating a long-term program of renovation and modernization under André Lurton, who also oversees several other Bordeaux properties, including Château Couhins-Lurton and Château Dauzac. The estate spans 61.5 hectares of vineyards, planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with a small parcel of Petit Verdot. A further 13.5 hectares is devoted to white varieties, with 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sémillon. The soils are predominantly gravel with limestone deposits, providing excellent drainage and structure for both red and white varieties. Vine density ranges from 6,500 to 8,500 vines per hectare, with an average vine age of 25 years. Vinification is conducted in temperature-controlled cement vats and stainless steel tanks for the reds, with malolactic fermentation in vat. Wines are aged in 50% new French oak barrels for around 15 months. White wines are vinified separately, undergoing whole-cluster pressing, fermentation in a mix of barrels and tanks, and aging on their lees in 45% new French oak barrels for 9–10 months. Château La Louvière produces roughly 20,000 cases of red wine per year, alongside its second wine, L de La Louvière. The estate has also been at the forefront of innovation, becoming one of the first Bordeaux properties to adopt the Stelvin screw cap for bottling in 2003. In 2013, Michel Rolland was brought in as a consultant to enhance the quality and international profile of the red wines, while the late Denis Dubourdieu continued to oversee the whites until his passing. Today, Château La Louvière balances centuries of heritage with modern winemaking practices, producing wines that combine structure, finesse, and longevity.
