Château Malescasse was founded in 1824 by the Renouil family, who owned the estate for over fifty years before selling it to the Pineguy family in 1887. The vineyard is ideally located between the prestigious Margaux appellation to the south and Saint-Julien to the north, benefiting from the exceptional terroir of the Médoc. By the mid-1970s, the vineyard had fallen into decline, with only four hectares of vines remaining. In 2012, Philippe Austruy acquired Château Malescasse and immediately set about revitalizing the estate. He enlisted the expertise of Stéphane Derenoncourt to oversee both winemaking and vineyard management. In a bold move to enhance quality and reputation, the estate declassified its entire production from the 2013 vintage, signaling a commitment to excellence. Starting with the 2014 vintage, Château Malescasse has demonstrated remarkable improvements in quality and consistency. The estate’s 40-hectare vineyard is planted with 45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot, forming a single, unbroken parcel. The terroir features a mix of gravel, clay, limestone, and sandy soils, with vines averaging 35 years in age. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with malolactic fermentation conducted in vat. The wine is then aged for up to 14 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, resulting in wines that combine structure, elegance, and the distinctive character of the Médoc. Château Malescasse offers excellent potential for collectors and investors seeking high-quality Bordeaux wines with long-term aging potential.
