Château Margaux is the only First Growth in the Margaux appellation, as ranked in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate’s vineyards date back to the late 1500s, and its iconic neo-classical chateau was built in the 19th century, replacing the original building. Greek-born entrepreneur André Mentzelopoulos acquired Château Margaux in 1977. Following his unexpected death in 1980, his daughter Corinne Mentzelopoulos took charge and remains the sole shareholder, managing the estate alongside her daughter Alexandra. Paul Bascaules currently serves as estate director, succeeding Paul Pontallier, who led the estate from 1983 until his passing in 2015. The 2015 vintage pays tribute to Pontallier’s decades of service. Approximately one third of the estate is devoted to vineyards, with 82 hectares planted to red grape varieties: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the remainder Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vines are densely planted at 10,000 vines per hectare, and Château Margaux was the first Médoc estate to adopt yield-reducing thinning practices to enhance grape quality. In addition, the estate owns 12 hectares in Soussans planted with Sauvignon Blanc for its acclaimed dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux, whose reputation now rivals that of Château La Mission Haut Brion Blanc. Château Margaux also produces a second red wine, Pavillon Rouge, and launched a third wine, Margaux de Château Margaux, in 2009. Annual production is typically divided with 40% going to the grand vin, 30% to the second wine, and 30% to the third wine. Château Margaux is celebrated for its elegance, refined structure, and expressive aromatics, often drawing comparisons to Grand Cru Burgundy. Its reputation for quality, longevity, and investment potential makes it one of the most coveted estates in Bordeaux.
