Château Pape Clément is a prestigious Cru Classé de Graves estate with one of the oldest documented histories in Bordeaux. The vineyard was first planted in 1300 by Bernard de Groth, who later became Pope Clement V, making it a site of both historical and viticultural significance. The estate, located in the Bordeaux suburb of Pessac, was acquired by the Montagne family in 1939 and is today owned and managed by Léon Montagne. Château Pape Clément comprises a historic chai and 32 hectares of vineyards planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%), with smaller plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle for limited white wine production. During the 1960s and 1970s, the estate experienced a decline in quality due to under-investment. This trend was reversed in 1985 when Bernard Magrez was appointed general manager. He implemented rigorous vineyard selection, modernized vinification with stainless steel vats, and increased the use of new oak casks in the maturation process. Today, Château Pape Clément is recognized for producing some of the finest red wines in Pessac-Léognan, combining historical prestige with modern winemaking excellence. Its wines are highly sought after by collectors and investors, prized for their structure, longevity, and elegant complexity.
