Château Pedesclaux is a prestigious winery located in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France. The estate was classified as one of the eighteen Cinquièmes Crus (Fifth Growths) in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, cementing its reputation as a producer of high-quality Pauillac wines. The château was founded in 1810 by wine broker Pierre Urbain Pedesclaux, who passed it to his son Pierre-Edmond in 1849. Following his death, his widow continued to manage the estate until 1891, when it was sold to the Count de Gastebois. In 1930, Lucien Jugla became tenant and ultimately purchased the château in 1950. In 1960, Jugla expanded the estate by acquiring Château Belle-Rose, a 13.7-hectare property he had been managing since 1943. Belle-Rose’s bourgeois house became the new home of Château Pedesclaux and was featured on the updated wine labels. In 2009, the estate was purchased by Jacky Lorenzetti, who also owns Château Lilian Ladouys in Saint-Estèphe and a 50% stake in Château d’Issan in Margaux. Lorenzetti further enhanced the vineyard by acquiring 12 hectares of Médoc vines adjacent to parcels owned by Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild, strengthening the estate’s terroir. Château Pedesclaux’s vineyards cover 50 hectares, producing approximately 8,000 cases annually. Of these, 44 hectares are in Pauillac and two hectares in Haut-Médoc. The vineyard is planted with approximately 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, although some vintages, such as 2017, featured a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon at 65% and Cabernet Franc at 7%. Under the guidance of technical director Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen since 2014, the estate has elevated its quality through the use of up to 60% new oak barrels, bottling with fining but no filtration. The estate produces three wines: the first wine, Château Pedesclaux; the second wine, Fleur de Pedesclaux; and a third wine, Le Haut-Médoc de Pedesclaux, sold under the Haut-Médoc appellation. Château Pedesclaux is recognised for its robust, elegant, and age-worthy Pauillac wines, making it a sought-after choice for collectors and investors in fine Bordeaux.
