Château Pichon Baron (also known as Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville) is located in the commune of Pauillac, near Château Latour, and was classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate originated in 1694 when Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan purchased it as a dowry for his daughter, who married Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville. Upon the death of Baron Joseph Pichon de Longueville in 1850, the estate was divided into Pichon Baron and Pichon Comtesse. The Bouteiller family managed the property from 1933 until 1987, when AXA Millésimes acquired it and appointed Jean-Michel Cazes of Château Lynch-Bages to oversee operations. Since 2001, Christian Seely has served as managing director. The 73-hectare vineyard is planted at 9,000 vines per hectare with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The grand vin, representing 45% of production, is sourced from the oldest vines on gravel-dominant soils. Grapes are hand-harvested, vinified plot by plot (up to 40 micro-lots), and blended carefully. Since the mid-2000s, Cabernet Sauvignon has increased to almost 90% in recent vintages. The wine is aged 18–20 months in 80% new French oak barrels. Château Pichon Baron also produces two second wines: Les Tourelles de Pichon Longueville, a Merlot-dominant wine from the clay-rich Sainte Anne plot, first released in 1986, and Les Griffons de Longueville, a Cabernet-rich wine from the same terroir as the grand vin, launched in 2012.
