Château Poujeaux is a historic winery in the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation of Bordeaux, with origins dating back to the 16th century when it was owned by Gaston de L’Isle of Château Latour, Pauillac. During this period, the estate was known as La Salle de Poujeaux. Over the centuries, the property passed through numerous owners, until 2008, when Jean Theil sold it to the Cuvelier family, with Mathieu Cuvelier taking the helm. Under the Cuveliers, the estate has modernised its winemaking facilities and vineyard practices, implementing organic viticulture and moving toward biodynamic management with guidance from renowned consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. The 68-hectare vineyard is planted with 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, with a vine density of 10,000 vines per hectare. The terroir is primarily gravel-based, with the best vines located on hillside parcels reaching up to 25 meters in elevation on the Poujeaux plateau. Vinification is meticulous: grapes undergo whole-berry fermentation in small stainless steel vats, oak barrels, and cement tanks, with a 25-day cuvaison. Wines are aged in 40% new French oak barrels for an average of 12 months. Château Poujeaux produces a grand vin, along with two second wines: La Salle de Poujeaux (formerly Moulin de Poujeaux) and Haut de Poujeaux, sourced from Haut-Médoc parcels. Annual production averages 25,000 cases, offering a classic Bordeaux claret with ageing potential and excellent value.
