Pre-Shipment Offers – Batailley 2017

As part of a new initiative each month we aim to unearth a drinking parcel of wines offered on a pre-shipment basis. Wine that doesn’t need storage but has perfect provenance and is ready to drink immediately.
The first of these is one of Pauillac’s most dependable names, Château Batailley from the 2017 vintage.
For those who know the estate, Batailley has long been one of Bordeaux’s great value buys. It consistently delivers classic Pauillac character—cassis, cedar, graphite and cigar box—at a fraction of the price of many of its neighbours. In a region where reputation often commands a hefty premium, Batailley remains refreshingly sensible.
The 2017 vintage was not heralded as one of Bordeaux’s great vintages but that does not mean there were not good wines made. Batailley received a host of good scores 94 points from both Decanter and James Suckling, 93 Jane Anson and 91+ Neal Martin. Displaying classic aromas of cassis, cedar, graphite and dark chocolate, the palate is polished and seamless, with refined tannins and a long, elegant finish. It captures the unmistakable character of Pauillac while offering immediate pleasure.
We can offer a small parcel of 20 cases at £230/6 inc vat or £220/6 for 24 or more bottles.

Scores
The 2017 Batailley has a perfumed bouquet, quite floral for this property, with violets infusing the vivacious red berry fruit. The palate is a little chewy on the entry, but it pulls through nicely towards a cohesive, dense finish. It feels primal, more so than its peers at the moment. Hopefully it will develop more personality with bottle age… I think it will. Drink 2023 – 2045. Neal Martin 91+ (February 2020)
This is straight and transparent with currant and dark-chocolate aromas. Orange peel, light tar and violets. Medium to full body. Gorgeous core of dark fruit and polished tannins that push out the edge of the wine, giving it a seamless texture. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Needs two or three years to show it all. Better after 2022. 94 Points James Suckling (February 2020)
