Château Rauzan-Ségla is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Margaux appellation, classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The estate’s origins trace back to the division of the immense Rauzan estate in the 1800s, which also created Château Rauzan-Gassies, Château Desmirail, and Château Marquis de Terme. In the first half of the 20th century, the Cruse family owned Rauzan-Ségla, and in 1994 it was acquired by the owners of Chanel, who brought in experts David Orr and John Kolasa from Château Latour. At this time, the label was updated to the original spelling with a “z”: Rauzan. The estate’s 70 hectares of vineyards are planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and the remainder Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, at densities ranging from 6,600 to 10,000 vines per hectare. The grand vin is produced from vines grown on clay-rich gravel soils, while the second wine, Ségla, accounts for 55% of production. Since 2018, the entire estate has been certified organic. Chanel has invested heavily in modernising the winery and vineyards, with Nicolas Audebert—known for Cheval des Andes in Mendoza—joining as winemaker in 2014. Chanel also owns Château Canon in Saint-Émilion.
