Château Rieussec is a Premier Cru Classé sweet white wine in the Sauternes appellation, part of the Graves region in Gironde, Bordeaux. The estate is located in the commune of Fargues and has a long history dating back to the 18th century when it belonged to the Carmes de Langon monks. After the French Revolution, the property was auctioned, eventually passing through a series of owners including Mr. Marheilhac, Mr. Mayne, Charles Crepin, Paul Defolie, Edgar Bannel, the Gasqueton family, P. F. Berry, Mr. Balaresque, and Albert Vuillier. In 1984, the estate was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Château Lafite Rothschild, who invested in a modern cellar in 1989 and implemented stricter grape selection to enhance quality. Notably, no grand vin was produced in the difficult 1993 vintage. Château Rieussec’s 93-hectare vineyards border Château d’Yquem and are planted with 90% Sémillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc, and 3% Muscadelle. The estate produces four wines: the classified Château Rieussec, the second wine Carmes de Rieussec, Château de Cosse, and a dry white Bordeaux AOC called R de Rieussec, made from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc with 20% new oak. Château Rieussec’s 2001 vintage was named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2004, reflecting the estate’s consistent reputation for excellence.
