Château Siran, one of the oldest estates in Margaux, Bordeaux, dates back to 1428. Named after its first owner, Guilhem de Siran, the vineyard has a rich history, including connections to the Toulouse-Lautrec family, grandparents of the famous French painter. Since 1858, the Miailhe family has owned Château Siran, maintaining its legacy and modernizing the estate. From 1980 to 2005, the winery produced unique art labels, similar to Château Mouton Rothschild, showcasing a different artist each vintage. The estate underwent a full renovation in 2014, modernizing the wine cellars, vinification facilities, and on-site museum, which houses ancient amphorae dating back to 300 BC. Notably, Château Siran features a secure cellar originally designed to withstand a nuclear event, now used for storing its oldest vintages. The 24.5-hectare vineyard is planted with 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. Located in the southern Margaux appellation, the vineyard lies between Château Dauzac and Château Giscours, on gravel and sand soils. Vine density averages 10,000 vines per hectare, with an average vine age of 30 years, and 10% of the estate is now farmed organically. Since the 2015 vintage, consultant Hubert de Bouard of Château Angélus has overseen vinification, producing what is widely regarded as Château Siran’s finest wines. Grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, undergo malolactic fermentation in tank, and aged in 50% new French oak barrels for 12 months. Château Siran produces approximately 10,000 cases per vintage, including a second wine, S de Siran. These wines are celebrated for their refined structure, elegant Margaux character, and aging potential, making Château Siran a standout among Bordeaux estates.
