Château Sociando-Mallet is a renowned unclassified Bordeaux wine producer in the Haut-Médoc appellation, located on the Left Bank of Bordeaux in Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, just north of Saint-Estèphe. Although it produces wines of Cru Classé quality, Château Sociando-Mallet was not included in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Official Classification nor the Cru Bourgeois listing, as its owner Jean Gautreau chose not to enter it for classification. Today, the estate continues under the guidance of his daughter, Sylvie Gautreau. The estate’s vineyards lie near the Gironde Estuary on prime gravelly soils, planted with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 55% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Vines average 35 years of age and are planted at a density of 8,333 vines per hectare. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and concrete tanks, followed by maturation in 90% new oak barriques for 12–15 months. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, emphasizing the vineyard’s natural character. Château Sociando-Mallet produces structured, full-bodied, and fruit-driven clarets with excellent aging potential. The estate also offers a second wine, La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet, known for its approachable style. Notable vintages to explore include 1996, 2000, and 2005, which showcase the estate’s rich terroir and classic Haut-Médoc elegance.
