Château Talbot is a prestigious winery located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France. It was classified as one of the ten Quatrièmes Crus (Fourth Growths) in the historic Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. With a history that dates back to the 15th century, the estate was originally owned by Sir John Talbot, Governor of Aquitaine and Earl of Shrewsbury. Over the centuries, Château Talbot passed through the hands of the Marquis of Aux, Monsieur A. Claverie, and eventually the Cordier family, who have managed the estate for four generations. Today, Nancy Bignon-Cordier and her husband Jean-Paul are the proprietors, continuing the family tradition of producing high-quality Bordeaux wines. The vineyard covers 102 hectares (250 acres) on well-drained gravelly rises near the Gironde estuary, making it one of the largest estates in the Médoc region. The red wine vineyards are planted with 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 4.5% Petit Verdot, and 1.5% Cabernet Franc, with an average vine age of 42 years. The estate maintains a yield of 45 hectoliters per hectare and uses 50% new French oak barrels for aging. With guidance from renowned consultants Stéphane Derenoncourt and Eric Boissenot, Château Talbot produces wines that are classic examples of Saint-Julien, known for their structure, elegance, and ability to age gracefully. In addition to its red wines, Château Talbot also produces white wine from four hectares planted to 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon, creating one of the Médoc’s oldest dry white wines, Caillou Blanc. All grapes are hand-harvested by at least 180 grape pickers to ensure optimal selection, and the red wines are vinified in a combination of stainless steel and oak tanks. Château Talbot produces three wines: the flagship Grand Vin, the second wine Connetable de Talbot introduced in 1979, and the rare Caillou Blanc. The Grand Vin is aged for 15 months in oak barrels, while the Connetable de Talbot is aged for 12 months, resulting in wines that are refined, rich in flavor, and representative of the Saint-Julien terroir. Château Talbot combines centuries of history with modern winemaking techniques to produce Bordeaux wines of exceptional quality.
